How to Plan a Thrift Sourcing Trip Before You Leave the House

This post contains links to my own digital products on Gumroad.

A good thrift run is part luck and part planning. The sellers who come home with the best finds usually did not wander in blind. They had a plan for where to go, what to look for, and when to walk away. If you flip items online, a little structure on sourcing day can save hours and a lot of money.

Why plan a sourcing trip?

Thrift stores, estate sales and yard sales all move fast. Without a plan it is easy to buy things on impulse, forget to check sold prices, or burn a whole Saturday driving between stores that were not worth it. A simple trip plan keeps you focused on profit.

3 tips for your next thrift run

  1. Pick your stops ahead of time. Group stores by area, note their best days (new stock, sale days) and plan a loop so you are not backtracking.
  2. Set a budget and a target. Decide how much you will spend and what you are hunting for, whether that is brands, categories or a minimum expected resale price.
  3. Write down what you buy. A quick log of cost, store and date makes it easy to see which stops actually pay off.
